I’m Vanessa, Chief Charity Officer at Loveworks Food Bank, and I want to speak frankly about what the latest inflation data means — and what we must do together.
According to new figures announced today:
• Grocery inflation in the UK is running at about 5 %, with food and non-alcoholic drink prices up 5.1% year-on-year. *
• Staples like meat, eggs, butter, coffee and fresh produce are showing steep increases, butter alone has risen 18.9% **
• Overall inflation remains near 3.8%, meaning many households are feeling squeezed on multiple fronts.
At 3.8% inflation, a product which cost £10 a year ago would cost £10.38 now.***

What this means in real life for you and I:
• Families already struggling with tight budgets face impossible choices: buy less, buy cheaper, or go without, impacting quality of family life and health.
• Community food services, charities and foodbanks like ours are seeing demand rise, especially as we enter the colder months with higher energy bills.
• Living costs rising faster than incomes deepen inequality — a household that was just about managing can tip into crisis.

What we are doing — and what we ask from you:
✅ We are increasing our support to people hit hardest: more food parcels, more incentives and working with other charities to ensure support gets to where it is needed.
🤝 But it’s not something any one charity can solve alone. We need:
• Government policies that protect affordability of essentials.
• Food retailers and suppliers to consider their pricing and how cost burdens are passed on.
• Public support — donations, volunteering, raising awareness.

What a great amount of love and support we received in Reigate today!❤️
We had a wonderful day, chatting with people in town who so generously donated to Loveworks. It was wonderful to see our community so wiling to help those who are struggling to make ends meet. We collected a fantastic 39 crates of food and £245 in donations, which will go to help those facing food poverty.
Huge thanks to all our volunteers who gave their time to support our collection today. We loved working with teams from Futureproof Insurance, @curtis.packaging and Connect Plus Services.

Our allotment volunteers have been busy harvesting this wonderful produce for our food banks.
Having such a variety of fresh produce to give to our beneficiaries can be a real boost to those facing hardship. The fresh fruit and veg is a great compliment to the essential food parcels we provide.

👏🏻Congratulations to three of our fabulous Loveworks volunteers who were all recognised for their volunteer work this week at the Reigate & Banstead Volunteer Awards.
Alex Quantick collected her Young Volunteer Award from The Mayor on Monday. We are so proud of Alex and this award is well deserved. Alex is a valued member of the Loveworks team, and is always enthusiastic and happy to help in all areas of Loveworks - packing parcels at our warehouse, meeting beneficiaries at our food banks and helping at fundraising events.
We were thrilled that George Chandler and Karen Tucker were also recognised with volunteer awards.
George is a real asset to the Loveworks team and excels at running our DofE group on a Saturday - we couldn’t do it without him!
Karen has been volunteering with us for 8 years now, providing invaluable support in our office - she is a whizz with a spreadsheet!
We are incredibly grateful to Alex, George and Karen for the support they give to Loveworks. We truly could not do what we do without the incredible dedication of all our volunteers. Thank you and well done! ❤️

It was a pleasure to welcome a team from Ryan to the Loveworks warehouse on Friday as part of their #RyanSHARES day. They arrived with a box of food donations, which was greatly appreciated. The team got straight into sorting food donations and packing parcels, ready for our volunteer drivers to collect and deliver to our beneficiaries who are unable to get to one of our food banks.
The Ryan team were really enthusiastic and we were impressed with how much they got done! It was a fun morning, but they all agreed that it had been an eye opening experience to the level of food poverty on our doorstep. We are looking forward to working with the Ryan team in the future. This summer, Loveworks would like to do a little more. As well as providing our usual food bank parcels to families, we would love to include a few extra snacks and treats for children.

This week we’ve been getting to grips with our new bread slicer, which was kindly funded by One Financial Solutions and Henry Smith’s Grants.
Slicing our bread makes a bigger difference than you might think.
It allows us to pack half loaves for those who live alone. It is also easier for our beneficiaries who find it difficult to cut a loaf, and for those who may not own a bread knife.
Our bread is donated at the end of each day by our food partners @chalkhillsbaker and @gailsbakery

We had a fantastic day last week with a group of 10 students from Reigate Grammar School. They came to volunteer at our allotment and in the warehouse. We were impressed with their hard work, focus and real interest in what they were helping to acheive. Three of the students had already visited before as part of their elective programme, and we were thrilled that they chose to come back and help again.

Our fabulous volunteer, Laura, arranged for Cafe Bridge to hold one of their events in Reigate, with money raised coming to Loveworks to support local people struggling with food poverty.

We had some fantastic volunteers at the Loveworks warehouse this morning. Children from @rsmprepschool and @micklefield_prep school came to help. We were really impressed with their enthusiasm to learn more about Loveworks and to make a real difference. They sorted food donations and packed parcels for our beneficiaries, as well as leaving our warehouse shelves very tidy! It was a pleasure to work with them. Thank you all for your support.
What a wonderful day we had yesterday for our volunteer tea party. It was lovely to get together at our beautiful allotment, to chat and have fun with this fantastic group of people. ❤️
South Road in Reigate had their summer street party this weekend. They raised a fabulous £130 for Loveworks, as well as a big bag of food donations! The cakes on their cake stall looked delicious and were given in return for a donation of food or money for Loveworks.

What a day we had on Friday!🌞 If you were out in Reigate, then you may have met some of our Loveworks volunteers and volunteers from Future Proof Insurance. We were in town collecting food donations and raising awareness of how Loveworks support local families who are struggling with food poverty.
❤️It was lovely to chat with so many people, and we were blown away by the generosity of those who donated - we cannot thank you enough!!
🥫Our warehouse shelves are now looking much healthier, but with over 1,000 items needed every week to fulfil our food parcels, it doesn't last long!

Reigate St Mary’s School has done it again!
We can’t thank the Reigate St Mary’s School community enough for the continued support that they give to Loveworks.

There can be many reasons why someone may not have access to cooking facilities for a while. It may be that they are in temporary accommodation, or that they have had to leave their home suddenly. Usually they will have at least a kettle or a microwave, and that's when instant snacks can be valuable.
We are running very low on these right now, and if you are able to add a few to your weekly shop, this would be a tremendous support.

In February, we saw a similar number of people needing to use our food banks to January. Our volunteers packed and gave out 218 food parcels, providing food for 511 people in our area who could have gone hungry without this support.

In these winter months we are in great need of food donations, and are currently incredibly low on tinned fruit and tinned meats. 🥫If you are able to help, please do add a few tins to your shop and drop them to a Loveworks donation point.
❤️Last month we gave out 211 food parcels to people living in Reigate, Merstham and surrounding villages. All our beneficiaries are referred to us because they have reached the point where they cannot afford to buy sufficient food for themselves and their families.

Their generosity has provided food for local families who would go hungry without the support of a food bank.
They have set up a regular food collection for Loveworks through their neighbourhood What’s App Group.

Today we had a wonderful surprise visit from the students of @carringtonschool . They delivered a fantastic Harvest collection to us. It was a pleasure to meet them and to thank the school for their ongoing support. What a difference these students and their school community are making to local families who really need a little extra help. You should be very proud. Thank you!

What a brilliant performance from the Isio Wealth Management team 🏆 They took on the notorious Faygate Tough Mudder assault course, in support of two charities. Successfully completing the challenge, they raised a fantastic £1,240 for Loveworks. We are so grateful for their support. The money raised will go towards our food banks and projects aimed at preventing food poverty. Thank you.

It was great to receive a donation of food from Future Proof Insurance last week at our warehouse. The team are now going to arrange a regular collection in their Reigate office!
Without the help of local businesses and individuals, Loveworks wouldn’t be able to support those in our community who really need us.

Thank you to everyone who donated at our food collection yesterday in Reigate. We are always blown away at these events by the generosity of our community. All the food collected will be handed out in food parcels to people referred to us because they are struggling to buy food at the moment.
A special mention to our Loveworks volunteers and team from Octavius and Connect Plus Services, who gave their time to collect donations and meet people at the collection.
