Anyone can face hard times. Anyone can struggle to make ends meet. Our food banks provide emergency help to those in crisis and are for local people in need.
They are manned by local volunteers, willing to participate and put something back into their communities. It’s simple. We are looking to assist individuals and families in our community who have, for whatever reason, temporarily found themselves unable to afford food. It is a project which accords well with the Loveworks vision and mission whilst offering the opportunity to make vulnerable people feel valued, accepted and special.
Our food banks are intended for those experiencing a temporary financial crisis and, unlike the traditional “soup kitchen” model which offers indefinite provision to any individual who presents themselves, we provide three days’ worth of non-perishable food items in sufficient quantity to meet the needs of the individual and their family for up to six weeks. Food is provided in exchange for a voucher which has previously been issued by one of our partner agencies.
The Loveworks food bank at Merstham is now supported by Fare Share Sussex. They are an organisation who works with large supermarkets to ensure that food is shared amongst local communities to avoid unnecessary waste. Since July 2016 we have been working with Tesco Gatwick and have received weekly supplies of ambient food for our customers to enjoy – salads, potatoes, bread, pizza, cake and more. It really does make a difference to many people’s lives.

Who can issue vouchers for use at our food banks?
We feel that an agency or organisation who is in direct contact with those in need are the people best placed to make the judgment call as to whether or not an individual qualifies for assistance from a Loveworks Food Bank.
From our point of view, anyone arriving at one of our food banks with a properly signed voucher is eligible to receive food. However, the food banks are not intended to fulfil an on-going need. The system has been designed so as not to create dependency and provides only short-term, temporary assistance, currently set at six weeks or six vouchers, after which agency partners should contact us to discuss further need.
How can you get involved?
- By signing up as one of our partner agencies / organisations, you will be provided with a number of vouchers which you will be free to issue to those you consider to be in need.
- Alternatively you can get involved by donating food items. We do have guidelines on what to donate, for example we could have a specific need for a particular type of food. We want to provide the best quality food items possible for our voucher holders.
- If you want to volunteer your time to help out at one of the food banks we would love to speak to you too.
To get involved please call us on 07912 628 013 or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
