I noticed Loveworks through connections in my church. I thought the direct action approach to local needs was excellent. I have just helped out a couple of times giving coffee at the station and being Father Christmas. Every time I do it I find it is great fun and it gives me a real community buzz. It is the best way of digging into the community in small bites and getting to know people, while helping Loveworks to give really effective help to our close neighbours. “I heard about Loveworks from a friend and I was just blown away by the whole concept.... Local people helping local people in need. I just felt that if everyone gave a little and spread some love then life would be so much better for many other people.

As a volunteer, I have helped on the Babyswim Project, wrapped baubles for the Christmas bag scheme and been one of the early morning smiles on the station giving free coffee and croissants to commuters.

Everything I have done has given me enormous pleasure...just helping in a small way is so rewarding.”

“I work for a large, global organisation that advises companies on HR and benefits issues based in London with plans to develop my career as an accredited executive coach in the near future. 

I volunteered for Loveworks because of the very personal nature of the charity. Many charities are huge and somewhat faceless, and it's hard to know the impact one has made. Linda Sourris is a great ambassador for Loveworks as she speaks with passion about the work it has done for local people and that is important to me. I've been involved in the Christmas Bags and Local Santa Scheme so it means I have experienced, first-hand, the generosity of ordinary people which has been incredible! 

If you feel you want to give something back, want to help others less but are not sure how, why not start here at home, right here in Surrey?  Don't be fooled into thinking that just because we don't see poverty and need every day in front of us, it's not there. “I lead a very busy life - working part time, running a home, looking after elderly parents, trying to keep fit - all the usual for a person in middle life! I was happy to volunteer for Linda , who lives locally to me, because she is clearly doing a fantastic job - which in the scheme of our own worlds - just makes you feel as though you are contributing to those that are far less fortunate than we are.

I help with the Christmas Bag Scheme and it makes me feel very humble. It’s not easy asking the general public, who are always far too busy, for time and money - but most do give and I guess that makes them feel as though they’ve contributed too. What I am actually doing is a very small contribution but if everyone did the same - it would share the massive load.”
