Everything can be solved with a cup of tea and according to Laura, a volunteer from Loveworks, you can go a long way to overcoming loneliness in older life.
Laura is the lead volunteer for the Loveworks Cuppa Tea Club, a monthly social event for elderly residents of Redhill, Reigate, Nutfield, Merstham and Horley.
The group meets at the Arkle Manor, one Thursday a month. Laura and a group of 6 volunteers arrange activities for the men and women who attend, including arts and crafts and quizzes. The club occasionally visits other venues locally too. In 2017, we visited The Gatton Trust and were hosted by Reigate Beaumont Care Home.
It gives the group the opportunity to socialise and have fun, it also helps to build confidence.
This is the biggest challenge for the club is encouraging the older community to take the plunge and join in! Transport too – we are always looking for people to help out here.
Laura believes her role as a volunteer is very rewarding, “I love getting to know people and on the occasion someone will come to the club with barriers up or a little shy, breaking through this and seeing the person beneath blossom, come to life and hearing there story is a real joy.”
A big thank you to Laura and her team of volunteers for their support.
Cuppa Tea Club visits Gatton Park
In 2017, our Cuppa Tea Club took older people on trips out in the community. We visited Gatton Park for an afternoon tea with a difference. The group were able to hear about the history of the park, toured the beautiful landscape gardens designed by Capability Brown, as well as enjoying their tea, cake and sandwiches. View the video of their day below to see how much both Mick and June enjoyed their visit to Gatton – including Mick’s love of tea and sandwiches!
If you know of someone living on their own who may enjoy being part of these types of excursions getting out and about and meeting new people, give us a call.
