The Loveworks community garden project aims to grow food for the community and offers the benefits of gardening to anyone who would like to get involved.
The project was launched in May last year and the first job was to tame the overgrown plot which has been unused for several seasons. We were lucky enough to be helped by many volunteers including groups from M&S, Reigate Grammar School, YMCA Redhill and the Community Payback team
Last Season in the raised beds, kindly installed by R&B borough council, we harvested strawberries, beans, squash, pumpkins and potatoes for the Loveworks foodbanks, Merstham Mix café and the community fridge at The Hub. Fresh fruit and vegetables are always gratefully received!
As the 2020 growing seasons gets started we await delivery of topsoil and compost in the middle of May to top up and improve the raised beds. We’ve already had donations of many seedlings and would always welcome some more.
Last year there were weekly manned sessions at the LW Garden and a few social events. It’s a wonderful setting on a Summer’s Day. We hope that this will be possible later in the season when social distancing has been relaxed.
Here’s a wish list of help / items that we would love help with this season:
Manpower (employing appropriate social distancing guidelines)
Help in the last 2 weeks of May to distribute the compost /topsoil onto the raised beds within social distancing guidelines.
Help throughout the season with planting, weeding and watering.
Canes, sticks to use as plant supports.
Netting or frames that can be used to protect crops from wildlife.
