The Loveworks Garden Project was launched in Spring 2019 at the Park Lane site in Reigate.
It aims to grow food for the benefit of the local community and offer the welfare benefits of gardening to anyone who would like to get involved.
In our first season we were lucky to have raised beds installed by R&B council and help from teams of volunteers from M&S, Reigate Grammar School and YMCA. A range of fresh produce was provided to The Hub at Merstham for distribution via the foodbank, community fridge and for use at The Merstham Mix Cafe. We held a tea party at the plot in June during National Volunteer Week – it’s a lovely place to be on a Summer’s day!
The Community Payback team joined us at the end of 2019 and have worked on plots throughout the site as well as the LW garden. They continue to offer great support for the project helping out with regular maintenance and establishing more growing beds on the site.
During the 2020 season the garden benefitted from a delivery of topsoil and compost to improve the beds. Despite lockdown and social distancing guidelines a small team of volunteers managed to provide a range of produce for use at The Hub in Merstham
Plans for the 2021 growing season
Now the weather has warmed up we are holding regular sessions on Monday afternoons
where volunteers can work together. Sessions at other times can be scheduled later in the season
- All levels of gardening expertise are welcomed helping with ongoing maintenance and watering.
- Any offers of vegetable seedlings would be gratefully received.
- Fruit cages or other crop netting would be very welcome help keep the local wildlife under control.
Let’s hope the can host some social events in The Loveworks garden very soon!
