Our Munch project supports local families during school holidays by providing an interactive activity focused on food with a hot lunch provided on a number of days during school holidays.
If you would like to help support ‘Munch’ especially, as seen in the recent Marcus Rashford campaign, we are seeing ‘holiday hunger’ increase please donate DONATE TO MUNCH
Working with the Red Oak Family Centre in Merstham since 2019 we have run a number of cookery activity sessions at the Merstham Hub during the school holidays enabling the children to participate with their parent/s to prepare a simple dish which they could take home to cook.
However, like so many others we have had to adapt this year. During lockdown we launched Munch@Home – provision of recipe bags for two easy, nutritionally balanced recipes (with some sweet treat options) created fortnightly which parents could cook with their children at home.
During the summer holidays, Red Oak and Loveworks ran weekly outdoor activities at the Merstham Football Club. These were all linked in some way to food including a visit to the Merstham community allotment and beehives. Pack lunches were prepared by the Merstham Mix Café and at the end of each session families had two recipe bags to take away. Healthy, fun recipes to make at home which included plenty of fresh veg.
Munch@Home returned for the Autumn half term. We provided Halloween themed recipe bags with ingredients to make spooky stuffed peppers and ghoulish apple faces! Pumpkins to carve and art activities were also provided.
We are very happy to be working closely with the Red Oak Family Centre to help support local families during the school holidays when it’s difficult for so many families to cope with the additional cost of meals and keeping kids entertained.
We couldn’t do this without the support of a number of local partners and organisations who have kindly provided use of their facilities, donations and time.
